Meso-Zeaxanthin (MZ) was not considered in the AREDS2 study, thus providing no evidentiary support for adding it to the VisuBright formula.

Along with Lutein and Zeaxanthin, MZ is another carotenoid found in the macular area of the eye.

It was originally thought that MZ was wholly generated from retinal Lutein. However, a research study ‘Verification of Meso-Zeaxanthin in Fish’ (Nolan et al, 2014), verified the presence, albeit in small amounts, of MZ in trout flesh and skin, and also the skin of salmon and sardines.

A further study in 2014, the Central Retinal Enrichment Supplementation Trial (CREST 2), was a two-year, randomised, blind trial where participants were given supplements based on the AREDS2 formula, but half the group’s supplements had an additional 10mg of MZ. At the end of the two-year trial there was no significant differences between either group in the measures of visual function and macular pigment.

With no discernible difference to the outcome of adding MZ to supplements, along with the fact that the MZ found in many supplements is synthetically derived from Lutein, Altacor has taken the decision not to add MZ to VisuBright.

The best sources of Lutein and Zeaxanthin are dark green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, broccoli, peas and parsley, with kale and spinach topping the list.

Other sources of Lutein and Zeaxanthin are; squash, red peppers, orange juice, kiwi fruits, honeydew melon and grapes.

Additionally, egg yolk is also thought to be a good source.

Fats also improve the body’s absorption of both Lutein and Zeaxanthin, so it’s important to include them in your diet.

75ML CLEAR PET SKYPACK JAR 38/400 NECK SKY75CT – This product is produced in PET which is one of the most recommended plastics due to it’s recyclability and can be feed straight back into the PET chain as nearly all areas have the facility to recycle this type of plastic along with HDPE and PP, making it a very sustainable material.

Recycling centres are struggling with some of the new Bio-polymers and acrylic style plastics as they don’t have the facility or capabilities to recycles these types of plastic and would recommend looking to get goods produced in the 3 main plastics which are PET, HDPE and PP.

38MM UNISHELL MET IHSLINER/SFYP PRINTED SILVER - This product is produced from tinplate and can be completely recycled and due to the amount of goods produced in this, a good proportion of new production would include recycled content.
